Pass this on...Please be on the look out for these little guys. They stand out because their tail looks like it was dipped in paint.

People claim the juveniles are more dangerous than adults, let’s consider a few points:

Venom Dose: a healthy adult Copperhead CAN deliver approx 450- 650 mgs of venom in a bite and the juveniles deliver less than 70 mgs of venom in a bite.

Venom Potency: The strength of venom is determined by the level of venom enzymes. The activity level of the venom enzymes tend to increase with size and age. So the adults venom would be more potent.

So if the adults have the ability to deliver more venom and the venom is more potent how is it that juveniles are more dangerous?

Here is how... the adult experienced Copperhead knows better than to deliver a large dose unless they have to and they have the muscular control to dose the proper amount. The juveniles cannot control that function, therefore, when a juvenile bites they pump the attacker full of every last bit of venom. Hence, why juveniles are more dangerous.
